Finland continues close contact with NATO, EU on GPS troubles by Russia

The President and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Friday held a meeting and discussed Global Positioning System (GPS) disturbances originating in Russia, said an official press release.

The meeting decided that Finland would continue to be in close contact with NATO allies and EU partners on the matter.

Earlier on April 29, National flag carrier Finnair decided to suspend its daily flights to Tartu, Estonia for month following failure to land its flights at the airport due to GPS disturbances.

Two flights of Finnair failed to land at Tartu airport due to GPS interference and had to return to Helsinki Airport on April 26 and April 27.

The President and the Ministerial Committee also discussed the Finnish Defence Forces’ participation in international exercises.

Finland’s NATO membership, deepening defence cooperation with the United States, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom and other important allies, and the significant changes in the security environment all have an impact on the Defence Forces’ international exercises.

The nature of the exercises has changed, and allies are conducting more and more exercises in Finland.

The goal of the exercises is to strengthen the defence of the Alliance and Finland and to increase allies’ familiarity with the northern operating environment.
