Rutte set to become NATO’s Secretary General

The outgoing prime minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte will become the next Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), international media reported.

Romania, the only member of the alliance holding out on his candidacy, removed its objection and was set to withdraw its own candidate for the job on Thursday, said Cable News Network (CNN).

NATO officials confirmed to CNN that Klaus Iohannis, the Romanian president and its candidate for the job, has indicated to allies that he will be withdrawing from the running.

The decision on Rutte could not be taken because there was not consensus while Iohannis was still in contention, but now that decision can go ahead – although the date for its confirmation has yet to be set, said the CNN report.

The term of current secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, runs out on October 1.
