Massive snowfall suspends tram, light rail services in Helsinki

Massive snowfall across the country from Monday night disrupted transport communications at different places on Tuesday.

All tram and light rail 15 services in the capital region were cancelled on Tuesday due to the adverse weather, said the Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (Helsingin seudun liikenne – HSL) in a press release.

The disruption took place due to ice on overhead wires following freezing rain. There were also problems with switches.

The authorities introduced replacement bus services at different routes during the disruption.

The tram services, however, resumed gradually in the afternoon from 1:45pm.

How did the city prepare for such intense snowfall and weather conditions?

    1. MichaelSmith says

The city authorities had made prior arrangements for snow removal and maintenance of transport services during winter. However, the sudden and intense snowfall exceeded the usual capacity, causing disruptions. The authorities are now focusing on restoring services and ensuring the safety of commuters.

How did the authorities manage to handle the replacement bus services during the disruption caused by the snowstorm? Was there any significant impact on commuters?

The authorities managed to handle the replacement bus services by coordinating closely with the bus operators and ensuring sufficient buses were available to cover the disrupted routes. Commuters did experience some delays and inconvenience, but the impact was minimized by the swift response of the transport authorities.

Was the decision to cancel all tram and light rail services the best approach to handle the snowstorm situation in Helsinki? I’m curious about the alternative options considered by the transport authority.
