Bangladesh PM resigns amidst student protests, leaves country

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on Monday against the backdrop of violent protests led by common students for the last three weeks, local and international media reported.

The situation turned into worsen on Sunday after death of 92 people across the country taking the death toll to 311 centering the student protests that turned violent from July 15.

Earlier in the morning, thousands of protesters stormed the palace of the Prime Minister in Dhaka demanding her resignation defying the ongoing curfew.

Bangladesh Army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman in an address to the nation on Monday said that an interim government will be formed to govern the country as the Prime Minister has resigned from her post.

He said that he would go to the president.

He made the announcement after a meeting with political leaders and eminent citizens in Dhaka in the afternoon.

‘I invited representatives of different political parties and discussed with them and decided that an interim government will be formed to govern the country,’ said Waker-Uz-Zaman.
