Don’t Buzz Drones ‘Round Helsinki Port – Keep Your Feet on the Ground

As of 18 April 2024, the Port of Helsinki’s areas are restrictive unmanned aircraft system (UAS) geographical zones designated by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, said Helsinki Port Authority in a press release on Thursday.

Flying an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), a drone, in restrictive UAS geographical zones is only allowed with a special permit.

The restrictive UAS geographical zones has been designated to protect port operations and the safety of shipping traffic.

The restrictive UAS geographical zones cover the land and water areas indicated on the maps below in the South Harbour, Katajanokka, the West Harbour, Hernesaari and Vuosaari in Helsinki.

In some parts of Finland, drone flying is restricted with prohibited and restricted areas that have been set up for a fixed term or temporarily.

In future, the Port of Helsinki may grant individual special permits for flying drones in its areas on a case-by-case basis, provided that its special terms and conditions are met.

People can apply for a special permit directly from the Port of Helsinki by sending an email to [email protected]
