50 UN experts condemn Israeli airstrikes on Rafah camps

Over 50 United Nations (UN) experts indignantly condemned Israel's deadly airstrikes on civilians in Gaza's Rafah refugee camp on Wednesday, reported Xinhua.

More than 50 UN experts issued a joint statement in Geneva condemning Israeli strikes on civilians sheltering in the southern Gaza camps and calling for an immediate halt to the flow of weapons to Israel, which they believe are being "used to brutally kill and maim Palestinian civilians."

The experts include Paula Gaviria Betancur, special rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons; Francesca Albanese, special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967; and Michael Fakhri, special rapporteur on the right to food, among others.

Furthermore, the experts denounced Israeli air strikes Sunday evening on a camp sheltering displaced civilians in Tal as Sultan in northwest Rafah which have reportedly claimed at least 46 lives including 23 women, children and older persons.

The experts stated the attacks were a flagrant violation of international law and an assault on human decency. They asserted that, even if Israeli leaders claim the strikes were a "mistake," they still bear international legal responsibility.

The UN experts demanded an independent international investigation into the attacks on the Rafah camps, insisting that "those responsible for these atrocities must be held to account."

They also called for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, an end to the blockade, and the lifting of restrictions on life-saving aid. They also urged for "an immediate and permanent ceasefire, along with measures to ensure accountability and secure the fundamental rights of Palestinians in Gaza."
