5 drown in Finland during midsummer

Five people drowned at different places in the country during the midsummer vacation from Friday to Sunday, police and local media said.

The last incident took place on Sunday afternoon when an elderly man drowned in Jämijärvi lake in Satakunta, police said in a press release.

The 69-year-old man, who was travelling by boat in the lake fell into the water, said police.

Earlier on the day, the relatives of the man filed a missing report with police at about 1:00 pm and responding to the alarm, rescue service people rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the lake.

Meanwhile, a woman drowned at Kristiinankaupunki, a municipality in Ostrobothnia region when she went swimming after sauna late Saturday night, police said in a separate press release on Sunday.

Responding to an alarm, rescue service people recovered the body from near the shore.

Earlier on Friday, a man also drowned at Södra Yttergrund Island in Kristiinankaupunki while swimming in the water.

Rescue service people received a call at about 4:30 pm and later recovered the body from the water.

Another 39-year-old woman drowned at Naantali, a municipality in Southwestern Finland on Saturday.

Police said that her body was recovered from near the shore of a cottage.

Another person was drowned in Porvoo, a municipality in Uusimaa region on Saturday.

The police, however, did not divulge the detail identities of the deceased.

The police are investigating into the cases to find out the reason behind the incidents.
