2 killed in accidents in Helsinki, Riihimäki, man drowns in Mikkeli

Two people were killed in separate accidents in Helsinki and Riihimäki while another man drowned in Mikkeli on Saturday, police said in separate press releases during the weekend.

A man was killed after falling into a construction site trench at Vuorikatu in Helsinki city centre late Saturday night, police said early Sunday.

The accident took place at about 10:00 p.m. when the man suddenly fell into the trench.

Responding to an alarm rescue service people rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the deceased.

Police, however, did not divulge anything more about the accident and the identity of the victim.

The police are investigating into the incident to find out the reason behind it.

Meanwhile, an elderly man drowned in water in Saimaa Lake at Mikkeli, a municipality under South Savo region on Saturday evening, police said on Sunday morning.

The incident took place when the man in his 60s went for swimming in the water near the beach of the lake after sauna.

Rescue service people brought him to the shore but he died immediately despite resuscitation attempt.

Police said the dead hailed from the same locality but did not disclose his detail identity.

Meanwhile, another man was killed in a road accident in Riihimäki, a municipality in Southern Finland region on Saturday evening.

The accident took place at about 7:30 p.m. when two private cars collided at the intersection of Kirjaustie and Lahdentie roads.

Driver of one of the cars died on the spot.

The police did not divulge details about the accident and the identity of the deceased.

The reason behind the accident could not be known.

Police and the Accident Investigation Board are investigating into the accident to find out the reason behind it.
