SDP tops in popularity, Kokoomus 2nd

The main opposition party in the parliament Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) became the most popular party in the country with 24.4 per cent support, according to the latest polls by the national broadcaster Yle released on Thursday.

Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party), the largest component of the four-party alliance government secured second position with 21.3 percent support.

The popularity of both the SDP and Kokoomus increased by 2.7 percent and 0.7 percent respectively from the previous month´s poll.

The radical rightist Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), the second largest component of the alliance government placed third with 15.6 percent support, followed by opposition parties Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party of Finland) with 11.5 percent support, Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) with 8.8 percent support and Vihreä Liitto (Green League) with 7.7 percent support.

The supports for Perussuomalaiset, Keskusta, Vasemmistoliitto and Vihreä Liitto were dropped by 1.8 percent, 0.5 percent, 0.7 percent and 0.6 percent respectively.

Two other components of ruling alliance Suomen Kristillisdemokraati (Christian Democratic Party-CD) and the Suomenruotsalainenkansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland-RKP) placed seventh and eighth with 4 percent and 3.4 percent popularity respectively.

The popularity of CD increased by 0.4 percent while the popularity of RKP remained unchanged from the previous month.

Research organization Taloustutkimus conducted the survey through interviewing 2,490 people from April 3 to May 7 and the margin of error is ± 2.0 percentage points.
