Polish man imprisoned, to be deported for assaulting Danish PM

A 39-year-old Polish man has been sentenced to four months in prison and will be deported from Denmark for assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the national broadcaster DR reported Wednesday, reported Xinhua.

"We have found you guilty of hitting the prime minister with a clenched fist on the right upper arm, causing her to be pushed off course. This constitutes violence against a civil servant in office," a judge from a Copenhagen court stated in the verdict released on Wednesday.

However, the Polish suspect pled not guilty in court, saying that he was too drunk to remember the details of the incident.

In addition to his prison sentence, the defendant has been banned from entering Denmark for six years.

The Danish prime minister was attacked in central Copenhagen on June 7, not far from her home, while campaigning ahead of the European elections. The man was arrested at the scene.

Frederiksen sustained whiplash and was taken to hospital following the attack, but released shortly later. Frederiksen was reportedly "shocked" by the sudden assault.
