990 to lose job, 28,000 to affect as HUS starts negotiation talks

The Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) has taken a move to reduce staff as a part of its austerity measures, said HUS in a press release on Thursday.

The negotiation talks between the management and unions will affect about 28000 staff with reduction of up to 990 person-years.

HUS said an adjustment of about 140 million euros is needed in the budget for the year 2025 and the authority is planning to save 50 million euros through reducing the employees.

"The budget framework for 2025 needs for adjustments of about 140 million euros leave us no option. Unfortunately, savings must also be sought extensively from staff now," said Jari Finnilä, Chief Financial Officer of HUS in the press release.

The National Supervisory Authority for Health and Welfare (Valvira) issued an order to HUS and the fourteen welfare regions to ensure access to non-urgent specialist care into line with the law by March 31, 2025, at the latest.

"The co-determination talks understandably arouse uncertainty and concern among our personnel. We will update the staff about the progress of the process through proper communication regularly," said Chief Executive Officer of HUS Matti Bergendahl.
