Military vehicle driver sentenced to 9 years for Tampere taxi crash

Driver of the military vehicle, which knocked down a taxi in Tampere resulting death of the taxi driver in March was sentenced to nine years and five months imprisonment on Tuesday, local media reported.

The Pirkanmaa District Court awarded the punishment as the allegations including homicide and aggravated drink driving brought against the driver of the military vehicle were proved beyond doubt.

The taxi driver was killed at Viinika in Tampere on March 9 when the vehicle belongs to Finnish Defence Forces knocked down the taxi, which remained standing at a traffic signal at the intersection of Lempääläntie and Kuokkamaantie, from the behind.

The taxi collided with the light post of the signal resulting death of the middle-age taxi driver on the spot.

Police arrested the driver of the army vehicle on charge of suspected of aggravated murder, aggravated endangering traffic safety, aggravated drunk driving, firearms offense and resisting an official violently after the accident.
