Speakers at a discussion in Helsinki on Tuesday underscored the need for strengthening bilateral relations between Finland and Morocco through collaborations in various sectors.
Pointing out significant developments in partnership between the countries in trade, tourism, and culture during the recent period, they also urged both the nations to take more effective measures in future.
“This year 2024 is an exceptional year in Finnish Morocco relationship, there has been an innovation about bilateral relationships to a new era”, said Krista Napola, Director of the Unit for Northern and Western Africa at Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the discussion entitled “Morocco: Where Business Blends With Culture” held at Eurooppasali in the capital organised by Finnish-Arabic Society (SARAB) in cooperation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, Helsinki.
Presided over by Chairman of the society Faisal Al-Fairs, Moroccan Ambassador to Finland Mohamed Achgalou addressed the programme among others.
Napola emphasised deepening bilateral relationship between Finland and Morocco through taking major steps to enhance cooperation in trade, tourism, and culture by both the nations.
Appreciating the role of Moroccan government, she said that high-level meetings and exchanges helped to boost the partnership.
She also appreciated both the countries for the efforts, reaffirming their commitment in tackling global challenges together and capitalizing on mutual opportunities for growth.
Speaking on the occasion, Moroccan Ambassador Mohamed Achgalou focused on the central role of culture in building bridges between nations and driving economic and social collaboration.
“Culture serves as a powerful gateway to enhancing international relations, as demonstrated by the growing dialogue between Morocco and Finland. Although both nations share common values of peace, tolerance, and cooperation, the potential for deeper cultural and economic exchanges remains vast. By strengthening these ties through cultural initiatives, we aim to connect the Finnish people with Morocco’s rich historical and contemporary contributions, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration,” said Achgalou.
He emphasized Morocco's position as a unique crossroads of civilizations, shaped by influences ranging from Berber and Carthaginian to Roman, Arab-Muslim, and Andalusian cultures.
The Ambassador said that Morocco’s rich cultural diversity, including Amazigh, Arab-Muslim, Jewish, Mediterranean, and African traditions, was highlighted as a vital asset in the country’s international relations.
While Morocco and Finland share common values like peace, tolerance, and cooperation, Achgalou stressed the untapped potential for even deeper cultural and economic exchanges.
“Morocco's cultural richness extends far beyond its historical roots. Our artists have made a lasting impact on the world, influencing generations through architecture, visual arts, and design.” said Achgalou.
He pointed out his country’s capacity to withstand global challenges, such as inflation, the Al-Haouz earthquake, and economic headwinds.
"Despite these global challenges, Morocco's economy grew by 3.4% in 2023, fuelled by a resurgence in tourism, robust exports, and sound macroeconomic policies," he said.
The Ambassador further highlighted the increase in foreign direct investment and a significant reduction in the current account deficit, which reached its lowest level since 2007. These factors underscore Morocco’s openness and adaptability in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
SARAB Chairman Faisal Al-Fairs in his presentation on the significance of colors and light in Morocco, highlighted how the colors red, blue, and green are prominently featured in Moroccan architecture and handicrafts.
He emphasized the unique blend of cultural heritage and business opportunities within Morocco’s art and design sectors.
“Morocco’s art and design sectors combine cultural heritage with business opportunities,” Al-Fairs added.
The speakers also discussed Morocco’s role as a vital economic hub between Africa and Europe.
The Moroccan government’s focus on green energy initiatives, sustainable development, and major infrastructure projects has further enhanced its appeal as a destination for foreign direct investment, they highlighted.
